Summary
When Ventus' Heart was shattered during his climactic battle with Vanitas, he turned to Sora for help. Sora's Heart accepted his broken one, and they merged so Ventus could be mended. Ven went to sleep to heal... and then his Heart, still attached to Sora's, wakes up. He finds that despite his state, he is able to project himself into the Waking World alongside Sora. As he heals, Ven regains lost memories and new perspectives, while living vicariously through Sora as a phantom. Through his strange existence, he wonders how he will ever get back to his body and find his friends.

In the Heartmates AU, the people inside of Sora’s Heart are awake! They do not slumber the whole time, waiting to be awoken by an outside force. They are able to be fully conscious and project themselves outside of Sora’s heart into the real world. They can see and sense the world, but can’t interact with it, like ghosts.
