“I’m proud of you for taking care of yourself, and for knowing when it’s time to let go. I’m still learning how to do that.” He pulls away, and looks deep into her eyes, face flat and serious. “Don’t feel guilty for letting go.”
She lets out a long sigh. “Take your own advice, you stubborn geezer.”
He breathes a half laugh out through his nose. “It’s easier said than done.”
Marceline looks him over and notices just how small he is. When she was little, she’d thought he could do anything. She’d thought he was so big and infallible, strong and calm and forgiving and funny and everything she wanted to be when she grew up, sans his dependance on that stupid crown. Now, he just looks… sad. Flawed. She wishes she never had to see it, to see that the father she’d always needed was just a tiny part of some pathetic, small man who was a menace to bartenders and museum goers. She wishes that she didn’t see the similarities between him and Ice king. She wishes she didn’t still care about him after having to see him go crazy for a second time now, after watching him wake up screaming on her couch every day for a week.

When Joel calls his name and comes jogging towards him in Jackson, pulling him into a hug as fierce, as joyful as the ones he got when he was back on leave during his army days, he thinks, Is that all it took? I just needed to leave him alone to let him heal? I could’ve just fucking ditched him and then gone back? It’s a painful thought, that his own attempt at support just hindered Joel’s healing, but it’s a giddy one, too, the idea of his brother back with him.
Then he sees Joel catch a kid who almost falls off of her horse when she dismounts, the motion as easy and thoughtless as if he were-
Oh, he thinks, when he sees the way the girl looks at Joel, all sass and no regard, clearly not afraid of him in the slightest, the way she uses his personal space as her own without a second thought. Oh, you paternal fucker.

Summary
She has mixed emotions when word makes its way to them that Joel Miller has returned to Jackson.
Tommy perks up at once, so clearly happy about it that she smiles completely reflexively just to see it. It’s a different side to him, him with Joel, a man who still worships his older brother to some degree.
No matter how little his older brother might deserve it.
To his credit, Tommy doesn’t ditch her, even if walking beside him feels like leash training a new puppy, the way he pulls forward and then catches himself, returning to her side. This late in her pregnancy, she’s almost at the waddling stage, and there’s only so fast she can get.
As they walk, she prepares herself for a silent stand-off with Joel. They’ll need to get some things straight if he is indeed here to stay the way she knows Tommy hopes he is.

The first time she comes barreling into the house like the devil’s on her heels, he’s on his feet with his gun in hand at once, stepping between her and the door, sure an intruder is about to burst through after her. He readies himself for a fight, already planning how to get an attacker out of the house and away from Ellie.
And then he hears her laughing.
He turns to see her, panting and sweaty, laid out on the floor like she’s a rug, her face practically glowing with the force of her smile. She lifts both hands to the air in fists and cheers.
“What are you doing,” he asks, but the question comes out flat in light of his confusion. He gives the door one more look, but no intruder is imminent, and he holsters his gun, going to one knee beside Ellie, still on her back, breathing hard.
“I beat it!” She says, clearly proud about whatever the hell she’s talking about.
“Beat what?” He asks.
“Curfew!” She nearly crows.
He blinks.
It’s possible they’ve had a misunderstanding about what exactly a curfew is.
