Estraven had asked me what a woman was, and what could I say? What had I ever known of women? I had been so long away from Terra that attitudes had changed; my female colleagues called me an “old chauvinist,” with a laugh. But I think perhaps even in my childhood, on the Terra of my own age, I had never understood women very much.
I was heterosexual enough, coming from a place and time where almost everyone was. I thought of love, of sex, only when I thought of women.
