“I’m going to ask you something potentially personal,” Andrew warns. He says it like a statement but looks to Neil before continuing.
Neil nods distractedly, still processing Andrew’s words, turning them over in his mind as if he looks at them from a different angle, they’ll make sense. Like if he stares at them long enough, they’ll snap into place with the rest of Neil’s life.
“What did you mean when you said you’re a girl?”
“Just that. I’m a girl.” The words have never tasted less true. And they never particularly did to begin with. “I’ve been pretending to be a guy for…reasons.”
Neil joins some language clubs, makes some friends, and learns that being trans is an option.
