“Don’t worry child,” White crooned to him with a fictitious cheer. “It’ll all be over soon.”
The machine strained, the bolts on its side whining. The air crackled with raw energy as blue bolts burst through the room. Then a loud boom echoed and a blinding flash filled the room. The machine blasted the boy’s cells with subatomic particles which split under the onslaught of energy. The very building blocks that made up the boy were ripped apart. The force of the blast tore through the rest of the lab. The shockwave shattered the lab’s equipment and walls. And then the whole room turned completely white.
And in the dust and darkness that accompanied the room, the boy's consciousness lived on.

Summary
Steve wished.
He wished for every foolish, unattainable thing a person can wish for. More time. That he'd been better, stronger. That they'd won.
He wished losing hadn't cost so much; Hawkins cracked open and burning, monsters spilling from the fissures and swarming the town like flies on a corpse; Max lying broken in a hospital bed like a careless child's discarded plaything; Eddie dead in the Upside Down.
He wished that he could fix this.
Robin pressed her forehead to his, tears cutting tracks of pale, freckled skin through the ash and blood on her cheeks as her mouth stumbled around the shape of Steve's name, begging him to stay with her.
God, Steve wanted to fix this. Fix all of it. How can he keep them safe if he's dead?
Or
Steve screams into the void and the void answers.
