Summary
He’s reminded, suddenly, of Marta: guilty only of a damaged trellis and a few amateur theatrics. Blanc had known from the beginning that she thought she was guilty, but hadn’t assured her of her innocence until checkmate. He did the same to Jud last night. Would he do the same again if it meant solving a case and bringing a murderer down, or bringing a wronged person justice? He knows he would, but it is not an easy thought.
In the immidiate aftermath of Martha's confession Jud has a small breakdown. Blanc helps him through it. Written as a companion piece for "Matthew 6:34."

Summary
What’s he meant to say to this priest? The right age to be his son, but the pastiche of his own husband thirty years ago crawled out of a picture frame, barring these eyes he has for him. They’re not the eyes of a killer, he thinks, or of a lover, really, despite what Jud is probably thinking. Instead he says, “I think you feel guilty.”

Proverbs 6:16-19
16 There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.Hatred is a mortal sin that only confession can absolve. Jud Duplenticy is guilty.

Summary
His first mistake is not picking up the phone.
In Jud’s defense, it’s been a long fucking day. And not one that he’s keen to recount.
He’s kept the damn thing turned off for most of the day. As a rule, he stays fairly available on Sundays, but—well, extenuating circumstances call for extreme reactions. Thankfully, he had kept enough of his head after Mass to force a shutdown instead of what he wanted to do, which was to hurl it against the wall and watch it shatter into a million tiny pieces.
Night is young, though.
Or: A Wicks truther comes after Jud in the middle of Mass. He's fine. Benoit disagrees.

Summary
Jud walks along the side of the road for at least half an hour, dressed in yesterday's vestments, underprepared for the slowly-thawing October morning, before a familiar Mercedes pulls alongside him.
He's been praying the whole time, which is the only reason he doesn't immediately chuck a rock at one of the doubtless-expensive windows. He wonders if Blanc deduced the perfect moment to arrive somehow, through some calculus of emotion or some sort of fantastical hearing aid trained on his breath.
Maybe Jud is just that predictable. Just that mechanical. Just that controlled by the obvious tendencies of his human flesh.
"I was wondering if you might perhaps be in need of a ride back to your parish, or if you're still working on the god part of your forgiveness."
"God forgives." Jud sighs. "It's not up to us to work for it."
He reaches for the door handle, and carefully doesn't look at Blanc who doesn't quite hide his satisfaction.
OR
Jud Duplenticy doesn't really have any friends. Nobody he's not bound to by obligation. Maybe in another world, Benoit Blanc could fill the role. He certainly keeps coming back to visit. But for some reason, he refuses to open up to Father Jud.
