For the most part, cheap chocolates left on kitchen counters, half-assed cards scribbled during lunch breaks, Aaron rolling his eyes when Robert would dramatically clutch his chest and declare undying love just to piss him off was more than enough for them. They never needed candlelit dinners. They never needed perfect.
But when you’re staring at the same four walls for six years, you daydream about the things you never gave the person you love. You build this version of yourself that is better. A version that doesn't let them down. A version that buys the right roses.

The kiss- the sex- the closeness of it all; the way Robert had crumpled in his arms, the desperation in his eyes. It was just a moment, a mistake. A brief lapse in judgment. A moment where everything felt raw and uncertain, but it had meant nothing.
It was a reaction to Robert’s breakdown, to the memories, to the flood of things he thought he’d left behind.

On a faithful day in August, Aaron gives in to temptation and finally sleeps with Robert. But it was just a one off- a mistake brought on by Robert's breakdown. It absolutely does not mean Aaron will sleep with him again! (Two weeks later, Aaron sleeps with him again. Then, he doesn't stop sleeping with him.)
Aka, the post August 18th rewrite in which they end up in an actual full blown affair- just like they deserve.

“I... I came to find you. Vic didn't know where you were, no one knew where you were, and neither you nor Kev showed up for the renewal. I told Vic you might still be here and that I'll come check on you, but… What happened? Who did this to you?”
The last part doesn't really sound like a question, it's said as if Aaron knows the answer already, and he probably does.
Robert squeezes his eyes shut. “Told ‘im I couldn't go through with it.”
“Kev?” There's a dangerous edge creeping into Aaron's voice. “Kev did this to you?”

it’s not aaron’s job to pick up the pieces, not any more, but this is robert, the man who he loves with every bone in his body and every breath in his lungs. he’ll do anything he can to help him, but robert’s good at hiding things, so when he does see the signs – maybe it’s too late.

“Miss Flaherty, I’m calling from HMP Hotten regarding an inmate, Robert Sugden. I’ve got your number down as his emergency contact,” the man says, except that can’t be right. Robert’s not in Hotten, he’s off on the Isle of Wight, and anyway, why would Liv be down and not Vic or Diane or Aaron—
The man’s still talking, and Liv realises she’s frozen in the middle of the hall, missed whatever he’s been saying, tunes in just in time to hear, “…hospitalised. We can inform you of how the procedure goes.”
“Sorry,” she says, her voice catching, “sorry, can you…can you repeat that? What’s wrong with Robert? What hospital?”
The man sighs, like he doesn’t get paid enough to deal with this. Liv refrains from calling him a twat and listens.
[Or: It's 2022 and Liv's at Uni and happier than she thought she'd get to be. Apparently she's also Robert's emergency contact. It changes things.]
