Summary
Kakashi was both six years old and a chunin the first time he went hungry.
He’d never been seriously hungry before. His upbringing had been unconventional, to say the least (the big hint there was a six year old being made a chunin), but the staying fed side of things had always been covered by his father. There were other essential bits of childhood, though, that had definitely been more of a learning curve for him.
“Where’s your mom?” a blonde boy lisped at him one day at the park.
“What’s a mom?” Kakashi replied, totally lost.

Summary
Chōji's thirteen when his father leaves on a three-month mission to Tsubu, the Land of Grain. It's the longest mission Chōza's ever taken, and the house feels too big, too quiet, with him not in it. Chōji tries to tell himself the time will pass quickly, but days stretch into weeks with agonizing, empty slowness. That is, they do until Chōji discovers sourdough. Or maybe it discovers him. Regardless, somewhere between failed sourdough starters and Shikamaru's lazy advice about bacteria cultivation, feeding schedules and scoring patterns, Chōji learns that small things — yeast, time, care — always lead to something bigger.
Or, Chōji learns that sometimes the best way to fill an empty house is to fill it with the smell of fresh sourdough and the laughter of the people who love him.
