Casting helped distract from the memory of Laudna’s eyes looking at her in confusion, from Laudna, dreadful in her murderer’s mourning veil, from the smooth skin between her ribs where there should have been a jagged scar.
Imogen didn’t know where she was. She had to focus on the where of it all, couldn’t contemplate the nagging fear that where should not be her greatest concern. She didn’t think about the unstable marvel of Ashton’s brain. She didn’t think about her body moving out of time with itself. To even consider it was impossible.

There is a world in which people's souls are made manifest, taking the form of a creature who walks the world beside them—these creatures are called dæmon.
Imogen has lived half her life with a dæmon that shows the world her soul is a wild and frightening thing and ever since she started seeing the strange-true images in other’s heads, she’s been thinking they might be right. Laudna’s cursed or evil, if rumours are to be believed. Her dæmon is unsettled, and as unsettling as she is. Maybe he always will be. But maybe the way souls appear is not how they are, Imogen thinks, because she’s never met anyone better than that strange pair.
A chance encounter at the start of the school year takes them across the country and years as they figure out who they are, to themselves and to one another.

Starting with the aquarium, a place that she can see flashes of in her memories that fill her chest with warmth and joy.

Laudna faced Imogen again only to find her staring at an empty space in the room. Tears welled in her eyes and her hands trembled. After several deep, ragged breaths, that trembling turned into a pulsing vibration as Imogen’s scars glowed, her hair lifted from her shoulders, and the small pebbles at her feet caught some invisible wind and floated into the air.
As though some outside force had control of Imogen’s limbs, she pressed off her knees into a standing position. Her scars which glowed purple began to shift tone to a bold crimson, and when Imogen glanced over her shoulder at the group with blazing eyes, she detonated.

The Temult ranch was modest, but her daddy and her had worked hard to maintain it just the two of them. There was only one of them, now, though, and Imogen could at least admit when she needed help. She didn't think she'd get it, not from these people who treated her like a pariah for the lightning kissing her hands, but she had to try.

Summary
Laudna is a children's librarian who loves doing story time, but unfortunately the kids find her more scary-scary than fun-scary. So it's very rare for her to be able to do that.
Imogen runs an outdoor school where schools in Jrusar send grades of children to learn about nature and get some learning done outside of a traditional classroom. Finding someone to lead a story time with the kids has been a bit difficult, so Imogen reaches out to the local public library.
This is a modern AU, so they don't have magic per se. This is generally going to be from Laudna's perspective, with a lil Imogen sprinkled in for flavour. I'll add more tags and characters as they become relevant.

“Please forgive me if I’m overstepping,” Laudna started, very deliberately cautious. “From what you’ve said, I gather that you don’t like Gelvaan much at all. Not that you don’t have every right to!” she hastened to add.
“Yeah,” Imogen sighed. Not like she hadn’t just been thinking about that, anyway.
“But now you’re coming back,” Laudna offered—an observation, not a question.
“For the week!” Imogen’s reply was maybe louder than it should have been. “I just have to get through the week and then I can leave.”
It was then that it hit her.
She had to get through a week in Gelvaan. And she really, really, really did not want to subject herself to that.
“Um, Imogen?” It must have shown on her face somehow, because there was a tenderness to Laudna’s voice that she wouldn’t have expected given her general exuberance. ”Are you going to be all right?”
