Summary
Ethan scrubbed stinging sweat out of one eye with the back of a tactical glove and impatiently cleared another cell. A choked whisper of doubt crawled up his throat as the dark shadows revealed no sign of his quarry. As he swung the muzzle of his pistol to cover each plane—corner, wall, angle back to the corridor—only shadows and slow wet drips of water on the floor greeted his desperate search.
Where was Benji?
Had it only been seven days since the taunting note fluttered under the doorway of his apartment?
"Funny little man is back with me. Don’t bother, Ethan, I’m going to ruin him forever."

Summary
“You want to get the fuck out of here?” he asks. A wave of recklessness is rising within him, a heedless, heady lightness that lifts him up through the weight of grief that’s buried him for days.
“What do you mean?” she says, brow furrowed, eyes flicking down to the weapons and back.
“I haven’t heard a goddamn word from the council about hitting back at FEDRA for killing our family. And I’m thinking I might just do it myself. You want to come with me?”
A spark of surprise flits across her features, but he can see the moment her rage surges up to meet his, hot and bitter in her eyes.
“Fucking yes,” she breathes. “Let’s fucking go.”

Summary
Joel looks up as Tommy steps back up to his side, the cuffs of his shirt wet with blood. Joel glances back to see Maria laid out on the bed, Isaiah’s baby blanket knotted tightly around her head. A dark patch of blood is already spreading on the light blue fabric.
As Ellie reloads and aims out the window, her jaw clenched, Joel’s gaze meets his brother’s. Tommy’s dark eyes, normally so full of laughter, are grave, fear tracing itself across the tense line of his brow. They stare at each other for a long moment, grim resignation growing in the air between them.
“You got any better ideas?” Joel asks. Tommy’s lips thin, but he shakes his head as he takes his rifle back from Joel.
“None. Get them ready, I’ll cover us,” Tommy says, his voice curt as he turns back to the window and raises his weapon.
