The Beast came into the shelter like this: Eight Spindles, late in the evening, hauling a reinforced steel kennel crate half their size out of the back of the shelter's rickety cargo transport.
"We found this one in the residential area out between twelfth pillar and central district," they said, breezily. The kennel's weight tipped the transport at a dangerously steep angle as they unloaded it. "Apparently it killed some kid's pet lizard that got left out on a balcony overnight. Also blew up a capture box, so that's fun."

Summary
Iterators cannot come of age. As this is an impossibility, Seven Red Suns does not expect that the twentieth anniversary of their awakening will be marked by anything in particular. To their curiosity, they find themself brought into a tradition that does not quite fit a being like them.
Yet, they go along with it. For many reasons: because it is important to their taciturn head administrator, because a god should not be so separated from their people, because they were built to admire such things.
And because an age from now, it will be all that remains of this fragment of their citizens’ lives.

The messenger of Seven Red Suns, not yet named, passes under the shadow of their Creator’s structure after a certain disastrous mission. Weary and still healing from a grievous injury, they cannot help but wonder if they could be something other than what they are.
Their Creator, oblivious to their messenger’s private struggles, faces the lingering effects of their own failures in the meantime.
