Summary

My attempt at chivalric romance/fantasy. Will the healer, Mike the Paladin.
Mike opened his eyes. They were clear now, bruiseless, and they were fixed on Will with an expression of pure, awestruck wonder. He didn’t move from his kneeling position on the floor, looking up at Will who was pressed against the wall, breathless and panicked.
Then, Mike moved. He didn’t stand, but leaned forward, his gaze never leaving Will’s. His hand, warm and calloused from battle, found Will’s where it lay clenched on the mattress.
“I will let nothing happen to you, William,” Mike vowed, “I swear to it.”
Before Will could process the words, the sound of his full name on Mike’s lips, Mike bowed his head. He pressed his lips to the back of Will’s knuckles in a kiss, a promise delivered directly to Will’s skin.Then, Mike was gone. He released Will’s hand, surged to his feet in one fluid motion, and slipped out the door, pulling it shut behind him with a soft, final click. The lock turned from the outside.

Will revered Mike for so long, so many nights of so many years spent staring up at the ceiling in the dark, wondering what it’d be like to kiss Mike, to get his hands on him, for Mike to touch him back, to love him back, until the thoughts seeped into his bones and made him squeeze his eyes shut, burning alive with guilt. He’d pull the covers up over his head, as if it might put out the fire, erase the images his mind conjured up, as he told himself it was unrequited. And it was so, so wrong to think about a friend who didn’t like him in that way, wasn’t it?
Mike made Will wait, and now he was going to return the favor.
OR: Will finally gets his lick back after having to wait for YEARS for Mike to come to his senses.

His first rut coincides with a visit from his best friend. Mike is triggered into his first heat.
“I’d do anything for you,” Wheeler says.
Which isn’t an answer, it isn’t really, Mike never really answers any of the questions he’s asked. But, it’s enough. He can’t hold himself together anymore. Will snatches at his belt, fingers slippery, sticks his hand into his pants. Groans. Throws back his head.
Mike’s rubbing his own wrist with his thumb, releasing the scent for Will. He’s pulling at the blankets, pillow, pulling fabric around the two of them. Takes off his too large leather jacket, adds it to the pile. “Can I?” Mike’s voice is different, closer to begging than talking. “Can I, help?”

“Do you want to go home?” He questions, leaning close and voice soft, and Will pauses, before nodding again. Mike lets out a breath, and lets his hand press against Will a little more firmly when he starts to sway in place again. “Okay, let’s go.”
Then he looks up and is met with smug faces, and Mike flushes when he realizes his own hypocrisy.
“I don’t talk like that,” Max recalls, voice high-pitched and overly girly and – Mike definitely doesn’t talk like that.
According to everyone in his life, Mike has a voice reserved just for Will. He tries to figure out what that says about him.

Without warning, Will's boot comes to hover over his chest. Mike stops in place, his mouth hanging open.
"Stay on the floor." Will's voice is uncertain, wavering with nerves, but his eyes darken like he's never wanted anything more in his life. He presses the tip of his shoe to Mike's chest, and— painfully slowly— pushes him down.
