They sit in tense silence, neither saying a word towards breaking or reinforcing the illusion they had been deluding themselves with for the past several months.
But the breaking point finally came.
"Are they safe here?" Ran asked.
"...what?"
"Conan-kun and...and Maurice-kun. Are they safe here from…" from whatever is keeping you away.
"...yes." Shinichi answered a beat too late for comfort but it was the first straight answer he had given her since this all started.
A boy arrives bloody on the Mouri doorstep. Ran demands answers from Shinichi. He tips his hand to reveal some truths.

When he met the boy, he had a strong suspicion that the brat wasn't ok.
Jigen was right. Conan was slowly dying.
