Summary
Subaru can count on several hands how many times he has been ghosted by other people because he was annoying, overbearing, and never fit in. Like clockwork he would give his heart and they would drop it and turn away, leaving Subaru to wipe away his tears and pick up the pieces. It would sting but it got easier to handle over time, especially now that he has his friends. That is until now, when Reinhard missed a meet up with Subaru. That's fine, maybe he was busy. Then he started leaving rooms that Subaru would walk into, always with an excuse on his tongue. Then... he stopped coming over. And that stinging got much worse. Unfortunately for Reinhard, once a dog has eaten enough meals, they refuse to settle for table scraps again.

Even if it's for tonight. Even if I can only do it once. I wish to show you just how much you mean to me, how much you have helped me. I feel so much when I am around you, emotions that I have never felt before, and I wish I could put it into words. But even if I can't I will use my actions instead to show you just how much I care about you.
Subaru is hurt after attempting to help some townsfolk get rid of some mabeasts that had been plaguing the area. Thankfully Reinhard is able to save Subaru right as he's about to get mauled to death and bring him to a place to get healed. They talk, feelings rise, old wounds that have never been healed bleed, and all Subaru wants to do is just bury it all back down and ignore it, but Reinhard refuses to let that happen. Damn. When did being in Reinhard's arms feel so... nice?

That was when Heinkel pulled his son towards him and spoke in a low voice. Each word was as toxic as the alcohol in his breath and dripping with contempt, “All these people here may be smiling at you and being all friendly, wishing you good nights and such but trust me, no one here has forgotten what you really are. Nothing more than a monster parading around in a flesh suit trying to act human when you’re not.”
He knocked back a shot and looked Reinhard dead in the eyes, “You will do well to remember that boy.”
