“I don’t expect he left it to you when he retired.”

That garnered a tired laugh. “No, retirement is often… out of the question for those with your ‘condition,’ as I understand it.”

He spoke around it so delicately, what she was. He wouldn’t overtly argue with Imperial dogma, but he wouldn’t impugn her just for being a psyker, either—maybe couldn’t, given the Warrant of Trade. The same blood was damning and sanctifying her. Or maybe it was simpler than that. Maybe she was his Lord Captain, and he was her Seneschal; maybe that was enough.

Heinrix sighed through his teeth. “Again, what I wish is not relevant—”

Abelard cleared his throat from the doorway. “Master van Calox? Would your duty allow…” he faltered.

Heinrix looked at the Seneschal. “Speak.”

“Would your duty allow you to perform this under duress? I can speak for myself and my people that no one would doubt your devotion considering all she has done for us, as well as for the Inquisition, but if that is not enough…”

Marazhai broke into laughter so intense he was almost crying.

Heinrix pinched the bridge of his nose. “Sorry, are you. Offering to threaten me?”

    “If it would help.”

    “And if it would not?”

Abelard rested a hand on the hilt of his chainsword. “I would no longer be asking.”

She permitted herself a fond smile. “He has quite gallantly rescued me from more than one situation I would not have been in if I had taken his advice in the first place, and only occasionally reminds me of that fact, and—” she nodded to the board, “—he’s been teaching me some of the higher strategies of regicide since he doesn’t care for how I play.”

“Too reckless with your Empress, he’s mentioned.”

Branwyn inclined her head. “I don’t think it matters if I win, do you?”

Xavier smiled, then, and it was sharp but there was something sincere to it that wasn’t exactly warmth, maybe an appreciation? “No,” he agreed, “I think a lot of things don’t matter as long as you win.”

    Summary

Once the lift was descending to her quarters and they were out of sight of the officers and crew, Branwyn gave Idira's arm a grateful squeeze before letting go and half-collapsing into Heinrix.

    “Lord Captain—” he said, alarmed.

“She's a telepath, Heinrix, she already knows that I—”

    “It's true,” said Idira.

“Not my main concern at present,” he replied, worry evident in his voice.

“—and I am in too much pain to pretend I don't need more help,” Branwyn finished, drawing a ragged breath.

Heinrix looked from Branwyn to Idira, slight frown creasing his forehead.

“Just carry her, iceman. I won't say anything.” Except to Cassia, maybe Jae. Kibellah if Idira found her around.

Sister Argenta if she was bored.

A flicker of something—maybe gratitude—and he swept Branwyn up into his arms, murmuring apologies when her breath hitched. The chill in the air was clinging to them and when the lift stopped, he carried her past her bedroom and her office into her Ablution Chamber.

    Summary

“Their names concern me less than their eradication.”

“As is proper, Sister Argenta. But it can be easier to fight a thing when you know what it is and what it does.”

Argenta made the sign of the Aquila. “Valuable but dangerous knowledge can be a burden, Lord Captain.”

Branwyn looked ahead to where Heinrix was in quiet conversation with Kibellah, kneeling by a crumpled body. “Yes,” she said softly.

“Msster van Calox carries it well.”

“He does,” she agreed. “But it pains him, all the same.”

“...Will he not let you share his burden?” asked Argenta.

“No.” Branwyn tugged at her hood. “No, he will not.” There was a quiet affection mixed with exasperation, something wistful.

Heinrix seemed to sense the scrutiny, or had heard their footsteps, and looked their way. His gaze settled on Branwyn, the brief twitch of a reassuring smile gracing his features before his more standard neutral expression settled back in.

Argenta needed to stop borrowing Cassia's novels. The Navigator had kept her confidence so far, but it was only so long before Idira found out, and then Argenta would know no peace.
