Buck chokes. Eddie slaps him on the back, hard, until he stops coughing.
Sophia wouldn’t have known to do that. She isn’t a medical professional, and he certainly doesn’t know about Buck’s history with choking. For now, Eddie is still the Diaz who knows Buck best. The one who protects him and looks out for him.
“So,” Sophia says, drawing out the word. “I’m taking up hot yoga.”
“You’re already hot,” Buck says.
Eddie’s blood pressure is not up to this challenge.
Or: Eddie's sister comes to town. Eddie takes everyone joking about Buck finally finding a way to marry into the Diaz family so normally. So deeply normally.

“Is everything okay?” Eddie asks, his tone shifting. The background noise crackling through the phone quiets somewhat, till all Buck can really pick out is the muted rubber impacts against concrete and indistinguishable shit-talking. It sounds fun over there. If you’re into basketball. Which Eddie is.
“Yeah, it’s fine. Well, no,” Buck says, and he knows that isn’t helpful. He remembers the last and only time he’d gone to one of those games, when he’d very swiftly destroyed both the mood and Eddie’s ankle because he couldn’t handle his own feelings. He wonders when he’ll stop being a lumbering bull in Eddie’s life.
“Are you alright?” Eddie asks, slow, like he’s talking to a scared child on a call, “Did something happen?”
“I’m fine. It’s just– My mom died.”
OR: Margaret Buckley dies. Buck is fine, but Eddie keeps showing up, and Buck really doesn't understand why.

Summary
Maddie’s eyebrows rise, and she looks past Buck to Eddie, the corners of her mouth curling upwards. “My kisses don’t work on Uncle Eddie,” she says, and if she thinks Buck misses the way she says it—Uncle Eddie—she’s sorely mistaken. He knows exactly what she’s doing.
And he realizes too late that that means he should probably be afraid.
Jee gasps, eyes going wide. “What?” She asks breathlessly. “Then how will his ouchies get better?”
Maddie hums thoughtfully—performatively—before her eyes slowly slide over to Buck. He starts to shake his head, unsure exactly what she’s about to do but deeply aware that he’s not going to like it. “I have heard,” she says, leaning into her like she has a secret, “That best friend kisses are just as good as mommy kisses.” She tosses her hair over her shoulder and looks at Chimney. “And almost as strong as daddy kisses, too.”

or; When Buck and Eddie are in Nashville for the firefighter competition, Eddie accidentally tells one of the other firefighters that he and Buck are married. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

"Eddie?" Chimney's eyebrows climbed so high they nearly lifted off his face.
"What." Eddie kept his gaze fixed on the stage, where Buck had gone very still, that grin frozen in place and his eyes locked directly on Eddie. “May can bid for Ravi, but I can’t bid for Buck?”
“I think that was different?” Chimney gaped at him. “…wasn’t it?”

Buck’s head tilts on its axis, in a manner that would be almost harrowing if it weren’t his familiar, ludicrously handsome face. “That’s what?”
“Stupid,” Eddie blurts out. Shakes his head. Rectifies. “Not—you’re not stupid. Not at all. I just mean that… obviously, someone should want you for all of you.” Eddie thinks that should really go without saying. “But even without all the addendums. You’re, like, a total smokeshow, man.”
Good God. That’s fucking embarrassing. Even worse—or perhaps better, Eddie is so ruined—Buck beams.
"Total smokeshow?” Buck repeats, nothing short of delighted. On topic, Eddie really could go for a smoke bomb right about now. Just—pull the pin and flee.

Eddie’s brows furrow instantly as he visibly tenses. "What? No she didn’t. Maddie invited me to dinner.”
“So, you’re here, on a date…with my sister?” That is infinitely worse than Eddie being on a date with some random woman. “What the hell is wrong with you? She’s married! To our boss! She’s my fucking sister!”
“Wait wait, no it’s not—it’s not a real date! Remember the mystery bidder? From the auction?”
Buck nods slowly, completely bemused.
“Well the bidder was me. Well, me through Maddie. I really didn’t want to date anyone so I asked her to make a bid on behalf of me. But in exchange, she pretty much forced me to go to dinner with her.”
“Except Maddie isn’t here, and she invited me to this restaurant.”
A laugh escapes Eddie’s lips. “I think we’ve been duped Buck.”
“Yeah no kidding.”

Eddie takes a very deliberate sip of water. "Yep."

"Someone spent over two grand on you, Eddie. On a date with you. Like a date-date. With food and conversation. And you're just— what, chill about it?"
Eddie shrugs. The picture of nonchalance. "It's for charity."
"It's for— okay." Buck gapes. He’s got nothing. He’s standing at the door and Eddie has deadbolted it from the inside. "Cool. Great."
It is not cool. It is not great. Buck is aware that his definition of cool and great has always been somewhat flexible, but this doesn't qualify under any interpretation.

“Uh, yeah. Thanks.” Eddie places a fiver in the tip jar and spins right on his heels, leaving the cafe in a rush.

My most best friend. That’s what Alba said. That’s—well, that’s who Eddie is to him, essentially. And if what Eddie’s missing is a little affection in a language that feels like home, well. Buck can give that to him.

Belatedly, he realized it was possible that people who were interested in men were supposed to be sitting there. But Buck was watching him with wide eyes, still paused leaning on his chair, so Eddie added, “I could use a six-minute break. You know, from finding out how many siblings every woman in this bar has.”
Buck’s eyes glinted in the dim bar lighting. He finally took the seat and asked, “oh, so you don’t care about how many siblings I have?”
