Steve, Dustin, and Robin volunteer to patrol the perimeter of Hawkins - which has been fenced off by the military, to keep the monsters out. They take down two demodogs, but Steve ends up getting injured. He decides to hide his injury from his friends to not worry them, as they walk back to town. But Steve starts to feel lightheaded, and is dealing with blood loss.

“Hey! No saying sorry! It’s not like me taking us off the path is your fault!” Satoru forces a laugh, and when it echoes back to him, he’s relieved to hear that it sounds almost genuine. Kitamoto will probably be able to tell, but not gentle, lonely Natsume, whose distant expression seems to soften when he turns to look at Satoru.
His eyes are warm and familiar and nothing at all like the glassy, doll-like gaze he used to watch the world with. He meets Satoru’s curious look head on, like he’s searching for a map out of this stupid, creepy forest inside his eyes. A small smile twitches at the corners of his mouth, though it is miles away from happy.
“This isn’t your fault either, you know,” he murmurs as he holds Satoru’s eyes, and wow, apparently he was all wrong about Natsume not being able to tell, after all. That’s embarrassing.
