Summary
In which Wriothesley, owner of a wildlife rescue and sanctuary, rescues a weird-looking not-gopher in a pool, which leads him down a strange mystery involving a government conspiracy, an illegal smuggling ring, and a Iudex that has disappeared from the office, sending Fontaine in a frenzy. Little does he know, the missing Iudex Neuvillette is a lot closer to him than he realizes.
(All he has to do is look closer at the fluffy otter creature currently curled against his chest, shamelessly using his pecs as his pillow.)

“That is a fox,” Barbatos points out rather uselessly the moment he steps foot inside Zhongli’s luxurious home. “You have a fox.”
Zhongli looks down at the adorable but wriggly (and hissy) mass of orange fur in his arms that he’s been trying to calm for the past hour. “Indeed. I have a fox.”
“Why do you have a fox?”
The fox tries to twist out of his grasp with an angry snap of its little jaw. Zhongli merely tightens his hold and ignores its very cute yips of protest. “I found him wandering the streets of Liyue Harbour, lost. I thought it prudent to bring him home in case he got hurt.”
--Zhongli, the old and jaded Geo Archon of Liyue, finds an unexpected companion in the form of a feisty fox spirit who so happens to be one of the Tsaritsa's youngest lieutenants in disguise.

The words remain the same no matter how much he wishes otherwise. By the time he’s done, the sun has set, casting his living room in darkness.
Ah.
It appears that once again, fate proves to be cruel and he is robbed of yet another person near and dear to his heart.
“I had wished,” he says to his too empty home, “that I could show you Liyue Harbour one more time.”
--Time's arrow stands still for no one; it merely marches forward silently, steadily. It is a lesson that Zhongli relearns in his new life as a retired god.

Those are some of the first words Ajax, starving college student extraordinaire, has the misfortune of hearing upon waking up in a brave new world from what he's fairly sure is a very fatal accident involving water and a shit ton of electricity.
Okay, so he's not dead. That's good. But what's this about him being stuck playing the character Tartaglia? Tartaglia, as in the no-good, one-dimensional, cartoonish villain who met his untimely, gruesome death in the first act of the original game?
Forget this. Like hell Ajax is going to share that fate.
And so begins one man's journey to save himself from his awful destiny.
