It all started at the barbecue.
Elizabeth let herself get tipsy, because she’d thought her son was leaving, but now it turned out he was staying, and his love had travelled through time to be with him. Sure, there was physics involved—half their friends were physicists and the talk around the grill was the most confusing mishmash of jargon and slang she’d ever heard—but there was also the business of travelling through time.
So she allowed herself a couple of extra cocktails. Difficult to resist, when Ed and Stede’s friends also seemed to be adept at well-mixed drinks. “Foghorns” featuring dry ice, shaken up by Jackie, and “lighthouses” featuring flames, mixed by John. Some of their friends were meeting each other for the first time, but already they seemed to have inside jokes and a familiar shorthand among them. And they folded Beth without question into all of it.
But Beth was too used to holding back to really let the drinks get to her head; neither she nor Ed ever did that, not with the memories they shared.
Sort of tipsy, sort of not, she went to answer the doorbell the next time it rang. There stood Ed’s colleague, Professor Zheng Yi Sao, and...someone else.

Summary

Summary
Ed arrives at his lake cabin for a peaceful weekend, but is soon interrupted by the arrival of his new neighbour. However, the house that Stede has bought is less of a house and more of a deathtrap, and now Stede needs a place to stay.
Rather than sending Stede into town to stay at a hotel, Ed invites him to stay at his cabin for the night. The night turns into the weekend as they spend their time together, cooking, hiking, fishing, doing a little pampering and getting to know each other. By the time the weekend is ending, it’s clear that neither wants to give up what they’ve found in each other.

Stede’s already killing it at this flirting thing!
“Pleasure to meet you, too. Ed.” He leans towards Ed. “So you called me here to talk about Ned Low’s challenge?”
“I think we should team up,” Ed says quickly.
“Team up?” Stede can’t imagine why Ed would want that, but he can’t turn down the chance of an adventure spent in Ed’s company. “Why, Ed, that sounds lovely!”

It was an hour before sunrise, and the purples and pinks of dawn were slowly stretching across the sky.
Stars winked out, one by one as the Earth slowly woke from her slumber. The first robin began to trill, soon joined by others. The tendrils of pink sky crawled further out of the eastern horizon as sparrows, warblers, and thrushes joined the dawn chorus.
A bittern stepped cautiously out of the reeds of the marshes at Revenge National Wildlife Refuge, and was almost immediately bathed in the yellow tungsten of headlights. The shadows of the reeds traveled across its feathers as the lights passed by.
