Summary
Darry never means to call Ponyboy his kid—not out loud, not where anyone could hear, least of all Ponyboy. But the word keeps slipping out anyway: in grocery store aisles, late-night emergencies, quiet moments when he isn't careful enough to guard what he feels. Pony hears every one of them. And eventually, Darry says it on purpose.

He stopped too late. The word was already in the air between them.
Pony’s breath caught.
“You… you said it again,” he whispered.
Darry’s hands froze where they rested on Pony’s shoulders.
“Did I?” he said, even though he knew damn well he had.
“Yeah.” Pony looked at him carefully, like the wrong answer might shatter what little ground he’d found here. “You called me your kid.”

Summary
“Help!” He cried. “My brother needs help!” In seconds a group of nurses surrounded him.
“What happened?” One of the nurses asked. Another came up next to him, reaching out and attempting to take Ponyboy out of Soda’s arms. A panic bubbled up inside of him as he tightened his grip on his little brother.
“No!” he cried protectively.
“Sir, we have to take him,” another woman said.
“Soda, let the nurse help,” came Steve’s voice. Soda felt like a live wire; like a trapped, wounded animal trying to protect its child. His body felt distant from him as the nurses finally took Pony away, and Soda pretended not to notice how Pony’s pale arm hung limply at his side. Steve guided him gently to the waiting room, where Soda sank to the floor in a haze.
Pony’s blood was all over him.

“We’ll get him through it,” Soda said, fierce and quiet. “We have to.”
Pony nodded, though it felt shaky and thin. “Yeah.”
“He’s gonna be alright,” Soda said again, like he needed to hear it himself.
Pony moved closer, reaching to brush Darry’s damp hair back from his forehead. The fever made Darry look different – younger somehow, fragile in a way Pony had never seen.
“You gotta be okay,” Pony whispered, voice barely more than a breath. “Please, Darry.”
Darry didn’t move, didn’t answer, just kept breathing in shallow, broken gasps.

It starts with a cough Darry says is nothing.
By the time the fever sets in, he’s saying things he never meant to, things Ponyboy and Sodapop were never supposed to hear. Guilt runs deeper than they knew — but so does love.
