    “For a while,” Kohane repeats. “Will you go back downstairs later?”

    The sound of the air conditioning flickers into a steady buzz. It doesn’t really do much—July nights are hot in the cloudy, humid way that rests heavy on the ground—but the sound pushes An to her side, lined up to Kohane’s body. “No,” she answers. “Probably not.”

    The silence she’s met with is more than enough of a reply. Kohane wiggles her hand out of An’s hold, curls their arms together with even less space between them than before, and traces the creases of An’s palm. An’s cheek settles on top of Kohane’s head, and with Kohane herself fixed inside the curve of her neck and shoulder, it’s nothing short of perfect.

    It's sort of a loser thing to sit out of your own birthday party. An is well aware of that, but if it keeps Kohane by her side, doing loser things is worth it.

    An-chan, Kohane calls her. To have a name like a human, An can’t be more thankful for. She smiles at Kohane weakly and moves forward until they’re close enough for her to reach out and touch Kohane’s face. Kohane nuzzles into her hand, eyes half-lidded and unfocused.

    “You tired?” An says to her. “We can find a station nearby.”

    Kohane yawns and shakes her head. “I’m okay,” she murmurs. When her eyes open, An can see each individual gear of her pupils turning in tandem. It’s captivating.

    More than anything else in the world, An just wants to love Kohane as much as she deserves to be loved.

    An directs Kohane’s attention towards a spot in the sky right above where they’re lying down. The lights of the stars flicker from where they’re covered by An’s pointed finger. “See that cluster right there? That’s the Sagittarius constellation.”

    When Kohane squints, she can see a group of stars brighter than the rest. “Really?” she mumbles.

    “Nah, I have no idea what I’m talking about.” An grins. “You’re just really cute when you’re concentrating.”

    As vast as the universe may be, Kohane thinks the stars in An's eyes are more than enough.

    For a moment An felt disappointed that she had never met such a woman in her life. It was a shame, to not have ever observed such eyes, simple in hue and yet more dazzling than a tapestry of gold.

    In a world where An and Kohane walk separate paths after high school, An's dreams are filled with memories of the girl she is supposed to forget.
