Summary
“Excuse me-”
Jolting, Cass finds herself nose to nose with an achingly familiar, and yet completely unknown face. The stranger blinks at her with round eyes as deep blue as Cass’ own sister and mother. She stumbles back a few steps when Cass bolts upright, just as startled. The girl is around Cass’ age, maybe a little older. Immediately Cass recognizes her, although her face is different. Sharp jaw rounded by childhood softness. Dark, straight cobalt locks frame her high cheekbones and bright blue eyes locked on Cass’ own. Before she even speaks in a familiar lilting accent, Cass realizes she’s looking at the younger face of her mother.
“I’m sorry to startle you,” she apologizes unnecessarily to the intruder under her oak tree. “But I was wondering who you are and why you're asleep in my family's garden?”

Cass II and Corinne take an unexpected trip into the past to meet their parents and come to understand them better as individuals.

Summary
The movement, shouts and sirens around her fade. The world goes quiet. And suddenly Caitlyn is looking up again at a blood red sky, watching a hauntingly beautiful blue comet cut across it. It touches that same ornate window she looks at now and the world erupts in light and glass and flames.
For years Caitlyn couldn’t stop imagining what it must have been like in that room, the milliseconds after that smiling missile collided with the window pane. For years she couldn’t erase the bloody image of her mother’s body on the debris-covered floor.
And now she stares up at that same room again, painfully aware that another member of her family stood there today.

There was a stretch of silence as Vi reached for a roll of gauze.
“About what?”
“I don’t know.”
Tenderly, the bandages were wrapped around her knuckles. Snug but not too snug. A practiced motion. Corinne kept her eyes on their hands and added:
“About the war.”

All she can think to do is repeat herself. To force Caitlyn to live through sheer will alone.
“I—” Caitlyn’s hoarse and broken voice is interrupted with a chest shuddering cough. “I haven't… Been very good at keeping those…”

“Hm,” Ekko picks at the wooden countertop. “Must be frustrating… Aren’t you guys supposed to be working on your ‘communication’ or something? You wouldn’t shut up about ‘I statements’ two months ago.”
“But I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be communicating!” Shaking her head and waving off his entirely sound advice Vi continues. “I’m just trying to figure out why they’re both being so weird… It’s like they haven’t had me living in their house for two years. Acting like they’ve never had a basic conversation with another human being before. What did I do?”
“So, again,” Ekko deadpans. "I’m not the person to ask.”

Officer Wickham snapped to attention, face turning red as the words finally spilled out of them. “During a routine patrol, we found your daughters in one of the former mining districts - a dangerous and restricted area - operating experimental tech without proper licensing.”
A gale of various emotions raced through Caitlyn simultaneously, nearly taking her off her feet with the force of it all. The first concern managed its way out first. “Are they alright?”
Wickham nodded quickly. “No injuries, Ma’am. But they are being detained now at the station. I’m sorry, of course, but it’s protocol no matter who - ,”
Caitlyn shook her head, cutting him off as she squeezed her eye shut and pinched the bridge of her nose. Of course asking the two of them to behave themselves with total freedom to escape the manor had been too hefty of a request. And of course they would have picked the most dangerous way to completely ignore said request. And of course it was the fucking hoverboards --

“I’ve been -” Caitlyn focuses on the gentle brush of Vi’s thumb over the numbed tissue. “Having this dream. It’s the same dream. Every night.”
She sees the shadows shift on Vi’s face - a sharp clench of her jaw. Her brows are furrowed, making her eyes heavy and dark.
“About what?” she presses when Caitlyn lets the silence extend for too long.
“I…” She doesn’t want to say this in front of Vi for a multitude of reasons. But her comfort is the main one. She imagines being told the same in reverse and it makes her feel sick.
“I dream I’m with… her.”

“For…it all, I guess.” Caitlyn pushes upward to rest on one elbow, gazing down at Vi, clear confusion written on her face. Vi lets her palm rest against Caitlyn’s cheek, keeping her gaze. “For still being here after all these years, for choosing me, for giving us our babies.”

After a life of fighting for survival, the indulgence can still feel foreign. Even the care and attention and love of her partner can elicit a sense of guilt. She should be doing more to deserve this. She doesn’t deserve this.
But whenever her worries bubble to the surface, Caitlyn is the one to reassure her. Over and over, until the message is engraved into Vi’s soul.

“I know what the pain is like. And I also know who you are, Cait.” Caitlyn felt the bridge of Vi’s nose against the underside of her jaw, followed by the ghost of a kiss against her neck. “You’re not shaking me this time.”
Forgiveness.
She didn’t deserve it. Not from anyone and certainly not from Vi. But the heart of the woman beside her was pure and true. All Caitlyn could do was promise herself, promise both of them, that she wouldn’t break it again. From here on out, it was hers to protect.
