He had been working on this little vacation of theirs for months. He wanted it to be perfect; he even outsourced it to the girls to get their opinions about what he'd planned. It mattered that he got their approval. Cress had no one else, and he knew Cinder, Winter, and especially Scarlet wouldn't lead him astray for Cress's sake.
He was stunned when all three gushed over his plan. His eyes felt hot thinking back to them assuring him that his plan wasn't stupid. That he wasn't rushing it.

To Haku, this was not a free-flowing river. This was a river bound by that strange magic that humans possessed, enabling them to harness forces greater by far than themselves. Haku could not see his own reflection in that tumultuous stream. Yet that he was here now, compelled outside the spirit realm, drawn towards a strange magic, told him he, too, was bound as surely as this other river was. It may very well have been a mirror in which he could see himself, after all.
