After a few seconds of silence Steve’s brows pull together in confusion. “Sam?” He asks. “You there? Did you even hear me? Or do I need to talk to you about listening to me for a change?” He tries to joke, though it kind of falls flat.
There’s a few more beats of silence and Steve worries for a second that he somehow accidentally hung up. Then—
“Do you mean that?”
Steve’s heart jumps to his throat and proceeds to freeze there because holy shit, that’s not Sam. This is a voice that he can pick out anywhere; one that he can’t forget. It’s smooth and deep and all encompassingly warm.
It’s Bucky fucking Barnes.

“Hello there.” Steve’s body went tense as he looked around. Who said that? He looked around again, but there was no one there. The TV was off, and well, he had never heard that voice before. Where had it come from?
Maybe he had imagined it. He was tired. He could have easily imagined the voice or something. He had done it before.
Steve stood up from the couch and looked down at the book. He opened it again, just to be sure. There had to be something. The library would not have an empty book just sitting on their shelves. They just wouldn’t. Steve was missing something.
“I said hello.”
Steve immediately dropped the book, because there was no mistaking now where the voice had come from.
It had come from inside the book.Holy shit.

Shy, Steve peeks over his shoulder, thumbs in his belt loops, and pulls his jeans down just enough to give Bucky a peek of blue silk. Bucky swears his heart stops as that silk is revealed, pulled up high on Steve’s hips, enough to show Bucky that those aren’t just some fancy shorts.
“Stevie,” he chokes out. “Those ain’t—?”
There ain’t no way. All Bucky is capable of doing is staring; he’s glad life isn’t a cartoon, ‘cause his jaw sure as hell would be on the floor right now. Hearts would probably be coming out of his eyes.
