“I’m sorry for what those guys said,” he says slowly. “The ones at the diner.”
Buck lets out a small, surprised noise. His head snaps towards Eddie.
“Oh,” Buck says, forcefully light. “It’s fine.”
Eddie shakes his head, narrowing his eyes at the horizon. Delayed frustration prickles his skin, tickling up his back. The hard, taunting eyes of the man, Harley, the way he sneered down at Eddie and Buck like they were something rotten stuck on the bottom of his shoe.
His hands tremble and he drops one from the steering wheel to his own thigh, clutching the soft cotton of his sweatpants.

“I should’ve done it,” Eddie says. He’s killed people before, was going to kill this one for taking Buck— “I should’ve been the one to do it.”
Buck shakes his head. He’s crying without any tears, which is a bad sign. “Is this—”
“We have to get you out of here.” Eddie lifts him up again, as gently as he can. “You need to get to a hospital—you’re dehydrated, those burns need treatment and your wounds could be infected—” He takes refuge in the lie that this is just another patient, just another call.

Then again, Buck can’t really think much right now. Every thought slips away from him, seeping through the gaps in between his fingers. Only one sticks, settling in his palm.
“Eddie,” he says. “Where’s Eddie?”
“Y’know,” the man sighs, “I’m getting really sick of you asking me that.”

“That man has a boyfriend,” Rose says, certain.
“He does,” Rae agrees easily, their voice equally certain.
“He’s never gonna tell me who it is,” Rose says.
“Definitely not,” they agree.
“I’m gonna figure it out,” Rose says.
Rae doesn’t comment on that, just dips their sponge back into the blue paint. Silently begins to layer it over the back of Rose’s hand, carefully dabbing to make sure that it fills the creases of her knuckles, the dips between each finger.
It’s impressive, really, how much doubt Rae manages to communicate though the gentle press of a sponge.
Whatever. Rose figured out Shane’s sexuality before he did. It shouldn’t be that much more difficult for her to figure out who his boyfriend was. She does have excellent gaydar after all. Though she really wishes it would more frequently kick in before she started sleeping with yet another gay man.
Or, Shane Hollander has a boyfriend. Rose is going to find out who it is, one way or another.

Ilya is sipping a cappuccino and watching Shane do very perverted yoga when he realizes that he doesn’t want to die.
It’s a dumb series of thoughts. He sees Shane bend over, neatly folding himself into a hunchback as his hands flatten by his feet, and Ilya thinks, I bet he’s going to love it when we’re old and grey and he can outrace me with my stupid hip replacement. And then he realizes that not only does he anticipate being old and grey enough to need a hip replacement, but that he actually wants to get there.

And suddenly Ilya saw the way Shane was trying to fold in on himself. Like he wanted to hide the parts of his life he had just let Ilya see. Now it looked like he regretted letting Ilya in. Or he expected him to laugh. Or leave.
He crossed the room.
“Shane.”
Shane shook his head once.
“I’m sorry. Forget it.”
“No,” Ilya said gently, crouching in front of him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I was teasing. I didn’t realize.” He paused, then said more firmly, “you’re not boring.”
Shane scoffed under his breath.
“I mean it,” Ilya said, ducking his head to try to catch his eye. “You’re the most specific person I’ve ever met. It’s fascinating. I love the way your brain works. And the way this house feels like you.”
