Summary
Sam has known he's wrong, somehow, his whole life, it feels like. Not just the weird drifter kid thing, or the thing where Dad and Dean treat him like he's not actually a part of things, but something deeper, down in his kidneys, or his liver or something.
He's just… he can't put his finger on it (is afraid to name it, to put a label on the way his gut squirms when Dean smiles at him). But he knows, okay? Knows it the same way he knows Dean loves him, the way he doesn't know his mom.
Not eating helps.

Summary
Written back during Summer of Sam Love 2011 over at Livejournal. So the request for the prompt was essentially for Sam-centric angst, and I hope I served that part up well enough, but it spins off into a much bigger, much more injurious story, exploring just what Sam might've been up to between finding out he's Lucifer's vessel and when Dean meets up with him again. Whumpage ahoy.
Prompt: "Immediately following Lucifer's visit in 5x03, Sam is alone in his motel room trying to come to terms with the idea that he is destined to be Lucifer's vessel."

"What could possibly make you stop just like that?"
Sam anticipated this. Because there must be a reason Sam quit, why he'd forsake the family business, even when the rest of the family was dead and gone. Wanting to be safe or normal doesn't cut it anymore, not after Hell, and the Cage, and Leviathans.
"A girl?" Dean prods, digging fingers into wounds Sam’s still visibly nursing. Knowing he's hit a pressure point, Dean latches on, unceasing: "Was there a girl?"
For a moment, Sam imagines the truth. The sweet, fleeting satisfaction of bursting that bubble. Imagines if he told his brother: No. There was a boy.
