Uzushio is alive. She has been alive since the beginning. She is older than the Tailed Beasts. Older than Hagoromo. She has loved and lost so much. She has also decided that parenting and the treatment of children, is decidedly lacking and takes matters into her own hands.
Uzu goes out and finds children, gives them food, clothes, bathes, hugs and anything else she can (not necessarily in that order).If she can fix things along the way, well maybe she'll do a better job than some of the crappy parents who've unleashed their hellspawn upon the world (looking at you Hagoromo).

This is a rationalfic take on "The Last Herald-Mage", inspired by HPMOR and other works. Accessible regardless of whether you've read the original series. Though far from perfect, the characters are trying to do their best with the information, intelligence, and skills they have. Unfortunately, their enemies are also doing that, and sometimes even reasonable decisions can turn out badly.
[Meta note: this starts out a bit slow, and book 1 is kind of a different genre from the rest. In particular, the rationalist content is fairly subtle at the start, and the effective altruism themes come out a lot more towards the end of book 2 and early book 3. If you’re moderately enjoying book 1 but a little bored, try sticking it out until the end of book 2.]
Ashamed of him, Vanyel's father sends his disappointing son to live with his strict aunt, the Herald-Mage Savil. Although he knows things will change, Vanyel dramatically underestimates just how different his life is about to become. Sparks fly as he discovers both love and magic.

We use the word disability, but please feel free to use the comments to add other language you'd like to include. See, Bucky and I had a chat. He knows I have a huge soft spot for him (and Steve, but we don't tell him because EGO) since we have some very important things in common. He knows I'd give anything for even a drop of serum. I know the torso it's attached to is a whiny little shit but my left arm is top notch. 10/10, would have two arms again.
We agree operating tables and attempted memory resets are NOT happiness compliant. We agree looking at scans of why your brain is so weird is pretty sweet. We agree compassion is a generous gift, pity is bullshit. MOST importantly, we agree that all our mission assists that let us overcome the non-standard features are great people and we love them very much for help and kindness.
