"I'm on a break," he said gruffly, assuming the newcomer was another john looking to make a transaction. "If you want to buy, you'll have to wait an hour." His voice was a mix of defiance and exhaustion—a testament to the life he'd been forced to lead since the fall of the prison.

Summary
Carl's mind was a spiral, and he was rapidly falling down into the middle. He stares up at the sky - the puff of the clouds jutting beyond a pale, bleak surface, the few birds swaying in the wind, the sun fading to a comfortable dim sphere, the sting of his eye facing everything all too bright even despite its gloominess - he could almost see the pit of that spiral, feel himself hurdling into the bottom.
I deserve this, I did this, I put myself here. Let me reap my despair.

Summary
When the Gov'ner blows up the prison, Carl's lost in the confusion. Only able to find Judith, he's forced to run. On his own for three months with nobody but his sister and the clothes on his back, he fights to survive. Eventually, he is found by Daryl and Aaron fifty miles from Alexandria during their recruitment search. Reunited with his family, Carl struggles to fit in with a new normal. Pining after pride and trust from his father, falling in love, and hardening into the new world order, Carl leads by example on how to live again- with a ruthless, unhinged touch.
