It wasn’t particularly big—it fit perfectly in his palm, and its stem was shorter than his pinky, but its vibrant hue exuded an aura of powerful beauty. Its surface was decorated with flecks of yellow, the skin sweet to the touch.

Every bone, every instinct, every lesson that was beaten into his body told Scaramouche to shoot. This was his job. This was the only useful thing he could do. Sethos was nothing more than his target…so why are his hands trembling? Why is he thinking twice?

But as everyone got settled pitching umbrellas, laying out blankets, and taking out containers of fruit, it was much too late to register that fact. So when everyone separated to get changed, Sethos had barely any time to sort out his thoughts without the rest of them looking for him.
