Lap one. Lap two. Ilya noticed two dimples just above the waist of Hollander's swimsuit.
Lap three. Lap four. Hollander's lane remained a study in stillness above the surface. Ilya watched the way water slid over the definition of his shoulders, the way his lats flexed with each recovery.
Lap five. Lap six. Ilya noticed the small scar on Hollander's right shoulder blade, a pale line about five centimeters long that caught the light differently when he rolled to breathe. He wondered what happened.
Lap seven. Ilya increased his pace slightly. Hollander matched without seeming to notice, his stroke unchanged, his breath pattern steady. He never felt challenged like that. The thought should've been desperate or discouraging. Instead, it lit something reverent in his chest, Ilya felt lucky. Desperately, achingly lucky.
