    "Just seeing Clark with his pups is enough to know he'll be a great father, and along with Bruce of all people, it was still a hard concept to wrap his head around, but nevertheless, it was happening. Bruce took a steading breath, it was going to be okay, he reassured himself as he cradled his –not big enough yet– bump. Clark was sweet, kind, gentle, patient, his most trusted ally, and his closest friend, he was the leading example of what an alpha should be like, and now as he floated carefully off the ground, each of Bruce’s sons on each arm, spinning just fast enough to make them laugh and shooting Bruce sweet smiles, Bruce realized everything would be fine, he already loved the pup that was on the way, and he loved Clark, how could anything—
    He loved Clark—
    Holy shit, he loved Clark."

    Or; Clark and Bruce are friends, close friends, best friends even, but an unexpected shared heat leaves them expecting a pup.

    "Exactly," Bruce replied, as he petted one of Selina's cats.

    " Why?"

    "Who cares?" Harley broke in.

    "He finally wants to step outside his boundaries! You have my respect!"

    "It's not about going outside my boundaries. It's about planetary security."

    "Really?" Selina said, half joking.

    "Superman is powerful enough to destroy the planet. I have to find how to stop him."

    This knocked Harley over, and Pamela finally stopped pretending not to pay attention.

    Selina didn't know whether to laugh hysterically or slap him on the head.

    "Why are you here, Nightwing?" Superman's voice was calm but firm as he spoke. He didn't even turn around, all his attention on the man lying on the bed, gripping his hand. He touched him as if he were the most precious thing in the world. Dick didn't want to look: Bruce shouldn't be like this, immobile, surrounded by machinery.

    "I'm here for him," Dick said, standing in front of the bed, still looking at Superman, because he couldn't see his father Bruce in that way.

    Superman made a contemptuous noise, completely out of place for him, "And obviously, you're alone. Where are the others? Minding their own business?"

    Dick curled his lip, defensive. "Someone had to stay in Gotham, you know."

    "If my father had been saved from a cult that wanted to sacrifice him to an alien god, I'd be right there with him," the alien said angrily. "But apparently, he doesn't even deserve that grace, does he?"

     

    (Batman was a legend. Batman was invincible. But Bruce Wayne was just a man, and Dick wasn't ready to face the chance of seeing another parent die, without being able to tell him he didn't hate him.)

    Clark heard it just as he stepped out the front entrance of The Daily Planet’s building. The sun had already set, a chilly autumn breeze dragging through his coat. It had been a late evening for him, catching up on drafts for his next few articles before some other emergency stole his attention from his work.

    “Kal-el.”

    He straightened, perking towards Gotham. Something cold gripped his heart as he listened for that familiar heartbeat. The voice was unmistakable; low, rough, and steady, one that grounded Clark almost as quick as Ma’s. In battle, hearing it usually meant there was a plan, that Clark could worry a little less about details; because the man he trusted the most – with his life and the lives of his family – had it under control. It soothed Clark when he faltered, bolstered him when his strength wavered, and steadied him when he teetered on the edge of sensory madness.

    And that voice sounded afraid.

    Clark was suited up and hurtling through the air towards Gotham before Bruce whispered again.

    “Kal–” came his quiet gasp. “I’m sorry.”
