Summary
He thought of all the pain and death that was to come. There was so much that went wrong in the cultivation world in the next few years. The weight of responsibility felt insurmountable.
Lan Qiren had never wanted to be a politician or leader. That role was meant for his brother. He had done his best in the years he had led the sect but he was aware that he was not the best person for the job. His interests had always been the academic pursuits and teaching the next generation. How could he hope to make an impact on the mess of political manoeuvring and aggression that was imminent? He decided he could only focus on the events which impacted his family the most. He could save Cloud Recesses from being burned. He could protect both his nephews from their disastrous relationships. He could protect the books they lost in the war.
Or
Lan Qiren travels back in time and tries to fix the future.

Summary
He’d never been good enough, never been the sort who anyone would want to buy. Too lazy, too dull, too disobedient. All the humans ever said was that he’d never be fit to have a home. Right up until, out of nowhere, someone bought him. He doesn’t even know who it is. All the shelter told him was that someone was interested enough to purchase him, and that he was going somewhere new.
That was all anyone felt like explaining. After being dumped at the shelter when his breeder gave up on trying to sell him, this is all there is.
Vampires don’t get the same courtesies humans do. Whatever makes the most money off of their existences is what goes. Shuu knows he’s awfully jaded by now, but after spending the majority of his life thus far in a concrete-floored cage, he thinks it’s reasonable to hold a bit of a grudge.
. . .
Pet Au!Shuu's first day in his new home with Reader.

Summary
By morning, he’s a jittery, exhausted mess. Not sleeping enough is fairly typical, but the extra burden of stress wears him down past the point of ‘normal’. Reiji kneels in his cage, facing the outward aisle, and tries to focus on keeping his posture ruler-straight— it’s an outlet for the nerves, and also (he hopes) a way to make himself even a little more presentable.
The humans who pass through the shelter’s narrow aisles are roughly the same as usual; curious, yet visibly disinterested in every underfed, desperate-looking vampire they pass. Most pause for long enough to skim the information clipped to the front of each cage and look over the pitiful creature within it, and nothing more. Nonetheless, Reiji’s chest goes tight with foolish, involuntary hope each time one so much as looks at him— then sinks all over again when they inevitably lose interest and move on.
Or at least, that’s the ever-consistent, ever-miserable pattern as it always is... right up until one of the humans passing by his cage stays.
. . .
Pet Au. Reiji gets a home (and is terrified of losing it).

Summary
The truth of the matter was that when it came to taking care of people and their problems, both he and Wei Ying were of one mind. However, whereas Lan Wangji was taught to care for himself as much as other people, Wei Ying, from early age, was taught that him having needs was burdensome. He disregarded his own pain with frightening ease and offered up evey part of himself for others to use with no reservation.
Thus, Lan Wangji made sure that his husband's needs were never overlooked, his hurts never unadressed.
So it was that when they purified an ancient temple and its goddess benevolently offered them each a wish in return, Wei Ying asked for his family: for Jiang Cheng to never have lost his parents and his core, for Jiang Yanli to never have lost her husband and her own life because of him; Lan Zhan asked for Wei Ying.
