Summary
“I was going to drive us back to my house,” he says, sparing a quick look at the traffic light. Still red. “Is that okay? We can go home– to yours if you want to?”
“No,” Chris answers quickly. “No, I…I don’t want to go home without Dad.”
The confession is quiet, whispered under his breath, but Buck hears the plain rawness as loudly as if Chris shouted. Throat constricting, he curls and uncurls his fingers around the steering wheel, grounding himself in the repetitive motion.
Images flicker unabated behind his eyelids. Eddie’s shirt sticky with blood. The cream carpet underneath him staining crimson. Eddie only thinking of Chris’s safety, his eyes fluttering closed when Buck reassures him of it. The hospital bed he’s lying on right now –where Buck left him.

Summary
Buck feels his heart drop in his chest in time with Eddie’s fall to the bottom of the stairs. He’s too far away to hear anything, but blood roars in his ears in a crush of fear and fury, and he takes off in Eddie’s direction before he knows what he’s doing. It’s kind of always been that way, regardless of the stakes. Whether it was turning in Eddie’s orbit and clocking his pain even when nobody else did, or pulling him to safety as he bled out on the street, Buck has always been hardwired to move toward Eddie.

Summary
If it were any other day, it might have been interesting to see the way Chim’s shoulders straighten, his eyes hardening as he slips into his role as their captain, laying down his role as their friend, as Buck’s brother-in-law, the father of Buck’s niece and nephew. Right now, it makes Buck’s fingers twitch.
“We’re sending Diaz in,” Captain Han repeats and Buck can see his jaw working around the words. “Stay focussed, Buckley. We need you to pay attention.”
The ‘we’ in question raises his eyebrows at him and Buck can’t resist the urge to scoff. His hand shakes slightly around his radio when he manages to reply, “I am. I am paying attention. It’s exactly why I’m confused about what’s going on here. Why are we sending in a untrained firefighter?”
or, when a hostage situation at a grocery store occurs, Captain Chimney Han sends Eddie inside. Buck handles it as well as is to be expected.

Summary
If Buck draws a line from the day of that earthquake until today, he’s pretty sure it would be as red as the string of fate and as strong as spidersilk. When he was living in Eddie’s house, Buck realised just how caught up in Eddie’s web he was and ran away, desperate to free Eddie from the depth of his emotions. Now, even though he’s moved out, a single smile from his best friend reels him back in, and he finds himself wishing for more time in Eddie’s orbit.
So when the ceiling collapses in on them, trapping him and Eddie inside the parking lot, there might be a tiny, microscopic chance that it’s Buck’s fault for jinxing them.
Or, a month after Buck moves out from Eddie's house, Buck and Eddie get trapped underground together during an earthquake and have a conversation that's long overdue.
