Summary
Buck also read about those who are about to die or have had an out of body experience when they did die of seeing people. People they knew and loved, family and friends, strangers they knew they could trust. Maybe that is how Death appears. Not as a great cloaked figure but instead as a kind face to give that person one last touch of love before they die.
If that is the case, he is glad to see Bobby, Eddie, Hen, and Chim running to him. At least he will get to see them one last time. Hopefully this time, if it is his last, they will be as they were before, loving, kind, and gentle. If he is to be led out of life he was glad his guides were faces he trusted implicitly.
Months after the lawsuit Buck had been essentially pushed out of the 118, existing only in the fringes of the firehouse. Sidelined, Buck watches the team go out on a call to be the man behind but that leaves him alone and vulnerable when a stranger comes into the firehouse with a vendetta.

It's the look that you'd think a stray, limp and weak animal would get—a fawn learning to walk with legs too long and thin to carry it's own weight. Something reserved for things below you, that you tilt your head downwards to look at. Something you forget by the end of the day.
Or... Evan Buckley doesn't exactly like pain, but he can't live without it and the accompanying gaze that finds him each time he's in someone's bed. But the 118 look at him with something different entirely, and it takes until he spirals and crashes for him to find out what it really means. Buck breathes out a silent laugh. He can definitely see Bobby being told that. He has a steadying presence. He's somehow able to make Buck feel like he's not being annoying when he goes on one of his many rants. Even when Buck's been told over and over again just how useless they are.
Buck shrugs, not sure where he'd even begin.
He turns to look at Bobby, wanting to shift the focus off of himself. “Do you like Christmas?”
