Eddie loathes the idea of soulmates. The words his soulmate will say the moment they realize they are in love with him sit heavy on his wrist. Heavy like a burden, like a cursed prophet, harbinger of death. Others cry tears of joy when they get their words, Eddie had cried tears of anxiety. The dark letters on his wrist read, “Dustin died.”
On the other side of town and yet worlds apart from Eddie, Steve loathes the words on his wrist just as much. Not because he doesn’t want a soulmate. No, he longs for them every day. And every day is a painful reminder that he hasn’t found them yet when someone randomly calls out his words. The letters on his wrist simply say, “Hey Steve.”

It glows and shines and thrums with it, and its color isn't like any soul he has ever seen. Gold. Pure and bright and vibrant, drawing him in like a moth to the flame. The taste that tickles the tip of his tongue is sweet like honey. Heavy like wine.

"Where is this muse?" The camera flickers between Oprah and Steve as they laugh at the question.
"My muse is chilling in the skies, watching me play. He's probably berating me for stealing his sweetheart."
Or: After Eddie's death, Steve returns to the Upside Down to retrieve his guitar. He learns how to play it and ends up becoming a famous singer, famous for his heartbreaking songs about longing and yearning for someone. For a while, that's it. It's not until sixteen years later, that some secrets are uncovered.
