"You — what?" he asks dumbly. He feels dizzy, his mind working slowly as if he is wading through the lake.
"Just for a few weeks," she explains quickly. "Just to give me — room to breathe. Keep the alphas at bay for a short while."
She blinks up at him , so pretty and plump, her skin shining like polished porcelain in the moonlight. She has the loveliest little flush upon her chest now, blooming in pink patches that he cannot help but imagine beneath his lips.
"I shall pretend to court you," Colin repeats slowly, his eyes tracing over the tops of her breasts, his jaw working helplessly. "And you shall let me — let me bite?" He cannot believe the words dropping from his tongue. "Let me — let me play alpha?" There is a sort of ringing in his ears.
Penelope's eyes go very round then, her breaths coming out quick.
She nods.

Violet Bridgerton has had enough of her three eldest sons refusing to engage with the marriage mart. She has seen her daughters Daphne and Francesca married in the last four seasons but she wants more grandchildren and she wants them now.
And so, in the week before the whole family and ton are due to descend on Aubrey Hall for the annual Hearts and Flowers Ball, Lady Violet has invited a select group of eligible ladies to the Hall to participate in a series of challenges where the ultimate prize is up for grabs: marriage to one of the three oldest Bridgerton brothers. Penelope Featherington is on her fourth year on the mart with no prospects.

Whistledown exists, Colin didn’t make any foolish declarations in the Featherington gardens, Penelope and Eloise are grand. Prudence is still unmarried. This started out as a purely crack fic but I accidentally kept adding plot and making myself cry. There is still quite a lot of crack though. If you crave period accuracy, sorry. I researched some bits with fervour and then hugged an anachronism or two for the giggles.

“I’m sorry,” he tested, pleased when she seemed to deflate a little in relief. “I don’t mean to upset you, Pen. It’s just—well, I feel very…it makes me a little crazy to see you with anybody else.”
To Colin’s astonishment, fear didn’t come flooding back into her eyes at his admission. In fact, her eyes seemed to go a touch hazy, the last of her frown melting away as she looked all over his face, her gaze lingering for a few seconds on his mouth.
“I’ve never made a guy crazy before,” she murmured, still staring at his mouth.
Colin’s belly began fluttering and clenching, a nervous energy suddenly ricocheting all over his insides—she liked the fact she made him crazy. She liked that he was a little surly and snarly and mean. What’s more—she liked that she was the cause of it.
“You make me crazy, Pen,” he whispered, dragging his eyes to her mouth. “Don’t make me hurt anybody else when all I want is you.”

She blinks at him for a moment in confusion, which he seems to take more as an expression of shock and he barrels forward before she has a chance to reply.
"Before Kate of course!" he clarifies in a rush. "Well before they met even, but it is still rather confounding, is it not?"
Penelope lets out a half huff, half chuckle sort of sound and leans her head back against the headboard to look her husband over for a moment. "Are you honestly telling me you were unaware that Anthony had a mistress?"
Colin's jaw drops slightly before his eyes narrow. "You knew?"
