Summary

The other teams were assembled as well. Fitzjames passed Crozier on his way to his own whaleboat to take his place with his team. The other captain gave Crozier a tired nod to tell him he was ready. Crozier returned the nod silently, afraid his voice would give away his worries that all their hauling would turn out to be for naught– that he’d somehow put them on the wrong path, and only led his men straight into the mouth of hell.
Crozier pushed the thought from his head. Pessimism would do him no good here. Rescue. They would find rescue south. Belief in that was the only thing that mattered.
Blanky hobbled up alongside Crozier’s leading whaleboat and smiled at him. It was a far more welcome smile than Hickey’s. The ice master had been doing remarkably well on his wooden leg, and even though he couldn’t haul, he would walk alongside the boats and even run between them carrying messages.
“Give the word, Mr. Blanky.” Crozier said.
“Forward!” Blanky bellowed, and Crozier strained against his harness and began pulling.In which the men begin the long trek out, and Fitzjames falls.
