At first, Acht doesn’t know what to make of Pearl.
Face to face with Marina again after almost a decade and she looks so different, yet completely the same—so much so that Acht almost completely misses that Pearl is an inkling. First contact with the supposed enemy, and she’s a puny thing in a giant coat who will not shut up about Marina until they rescue her. And Marina, steadfast, serious Marina, is completely smitten with her.
[Pearl is the first inkling Acht has ever met. Slight spoilers for the very beginning of Side Order.]

Michael is the last human alive in an experiment he thought would kill him and now finds himself in another experiment designed to test octolings for the world above.
He finds agent 8 and, wanting to help, decides to join in her adventure to the surface.
if only humans could actually be there for the tests since the aftermath is less than pleasant (and far out of either of their comfort zone.)
