He used to be such a brash little bitch when he and Roy played together, and since his return to Richmond he's been more of a whiny little bitch, but now he's hardly acting like a little bitch at all. Roy doesn't know what to do with it.
"Is it just me, or has Tartt been almost tolerable lately?" he asks one day in the coaches' office. "Fucking weird."
No one says anything for a minute, and Roy has mentally moved on to planning next week's drills when Beard says, "Roy, everything that kid has ever done was to get your attention."

But Arthur still can’t see, and John makes some unfortunate discoveries about his new body, and they’re both having a hell of a time of it. They aren’t alone, but it’s hard to remember that when you don’t share the same moral frame anymore. Hard, but not impossible.

Phoenix regards him silently, something lurking in his gaze. “Was it just for her benefit that you’re here, Miles?” he asks quietly.
Miles balks. “I—I wouldn’t have imposed otherwise.”
To his surprise, Phoenix’s jaw clenches, irritation lighting up his eyes. “Imposed?” he repeats slowly. “You think you imposed?”
On the last night of his stay with the Wrights, Miles has to face his feelings for Phoenix head-on. It doesn't go well...and then, it does.

Miles pauses. Slowly, he asks, “In my entire career prior to my meeting you, how many cases do you think I prosecuted?”
Phoenix’s brow furrows. “Over a hundred, I imagine,” he says.
“One-hundred and sixty-eight,” Miles confirms. His tongue feels like lead. “How many did I win?”
“All of them.” Phoenix tosses this answer out easily. Miles can see his confusion.
“Yes,” Miles says. “I found every single defendant out of one-hundred and sixty-eight guilty.”
Phoenix’s eyes go wide. He leans back. Leans away.
Don’t make me say it, a small part of Miles begs. The larger part of his conscience bares its teeth, sings, say it, say it, you deserve to see the hate in his eyes. He does. He does.
“Out of the one-hundred and sixty-eight defendants I found guilty,” Miles rasps out, “how many were actually innocent?”
After State v. Engarde, Miles and Phoenix have a conversation regarding the former's disappearance. Featuring late night chats, reckoning with the pain one has caused, and revelations on what it means to atone.
