Summary
Preening was the most intimate ritual in avian cultures. Done only by family and partners, it was more than simple hygiene for avians. It was a gesture of trust and love. There were very specific customs about where they were done, what words were spoken to cue the ritual, and who could do it. Traditions varied slightly, but the core concepts remained the same. Among avians, requests to preen and be preened were expected to be semi-frequent, in order to maintain the deep bonds that avians kept with each other.
Or, 5 times Bruce preens his birds and 1 time they preen him.

Tucker looked unsure while Sam snorted. "They caused the burn you just treated," she sneered.
"And what if it's not our parents?" Danny rushed to ask. "What if it's the GIW? Or Vlad? Or Freakshow again? Or a horde of ninja swarm out of the shadows and kidnap me?" Danny paused to let them laugh at his silly joke. "All I'm saying is if it's ever bad, really bad, we should have a plan. It's like those stupid fire drills the school makes us do, when has the school ever actually been on fire?"
Jazz sighed, but reluctantly nodded. "The last resort plan."
Danny nodded, "The last resort. So, you guys ready to hear it?"
Sam rolled her eyes, but nodded along with the others.
"Okay for this plan we need Batman, so step one is to get to Gotham."

“That's okay, Tim,” blue man smiles again. “How old are you?”
Tim knows this one. He's been working really hard on his numbers. “Four!” He holds up four fingers. “That's this many!”

Four-year-old Tim is having a sleepover with the Waynes. He just wishes he knew when his parents were going to call.
(Meanwhile, Tim's family are trying desperately to avoid letting him know that until yesterday he was seventeen – and that his parents won't call him ever again.)

Tim came to a halt when he saw Dick. The teen sat with his forehead rested against the door to the holding cell. He was collapsed against the glass, allowing it to hold him. His eyes were red and swollen. Tear-streaks stained his cheeks. His breathing was labored, and he shuddered in sporadic intervals.
It was clear that Dick had been sobbing, wailing, begging to be released from his prison. Tim knew the prison all too well; the only difference being that his was deep in the heart of Nanda Parbat, and Dick’s was beneath the surface of an industrial park in California.
It's been three months since Dick escaped Deathstroke. Tim knows what it's like to be thoroughly shattered. He does what he can to help Dick pick up the pieces.

"You're, like, my age." Bewilderment must be clear on Jason's face, because he can feel it in his parted mouth and furrowed brows, but Stray seems not to notice it. Stray probably hadn't even realized he cut Jason off. The kid's been staring at him as if he were a spectacle —a young one, apparently—ever since he took off his helmet.
"First of all, I'm nineteen, not ten," he ignores Stray, who snapped out of his dazed state to correct his own age, "And second of all, what's it to you?" he spits out.

Tim has the determination of a Robin, but not exactly the training of one. Jason hasn't made a friend since he came back, and his introspective skills are lacking. The two cross paths and talk.

Jason’s honestly surprised he doesn’t get a knife in the gut for that. Tim is wise enough to keep his mouth shut.Wise - Jason decides firmly - but also breathtakingly stupid, because he takes two steps away from the truck and almost falls flat on his face when his injured leg gives out.
Jason catches him, right in time for him to say, “Right. Stab wound. Forgot about that.”Jason sighs, casts his gaze to the sky, and mentally apologizes to Bruce. He’s herding cats here. He and Dick weren’t this bad, were they?
(They were, he knows they were, which just makes this whole fiasco even more annoying.)
