Evan “Buck” Buckley and his older sister Maddie were adopted by firefighter captain Bobby Nash and his retired cop wife Athena Grant. Buck grew up hard of hearing as long as he could remember. To communicate he speaks and uses American Sign Language, and his sister is completely deaf she only uses American Sign Language.

Eddie Diaz grew up in Texas but when he gets in a car wreck his wife passes away and their five year old son loses his hearing. Eddie found a school for the deaf in Los Angeles. With that he packs their bags and moves to LA.

“Really, Maddie, it’s going to be fine,” Bobby continued, when Maddie didn’t respond to his initial words of comfort. “We’ll get out of here soon.”
“I know,” she said with a sigh. Bobby’s kindness was somehow more suffocating then the elevator walls. She kind of just wished he would say what he really felt, so that Maddie knew what kind of ground she was standing on. Years of marriage to Doug had taught her that sometimes uncertainty was worse than dread. But Maddie was too much of a coward to bring it up, so she just settled on keeping up the small talk. “I just don’t like feeling trapped,” she added awkwardly.
Bobby nodded. “I get it. I hate feeling out of control.”
Or: A few months after Maddie's return from Boston, Maddie and Bobby get stuck together in an elevator. Maddie's never really had a one-on-one conversation with Bobby before, and she's convinced that the man doesn't like her very much. But when they get to talking, she realizes that she may have more in common with him than she realized.
