There were moments when I saw him, and he saw me—moments full of such raw honesty, the likes of which life had yet to, and has yet since, offered me. In that way, darkness was not punishment but an invitation to integration—one I cannot help but be eternally grateful for.
I suppose it is as Rilke said: “Beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are barely able to endure, and it amazes us so because it serenely disdains to destroy us. Every Angel is terror.” I, stupidly, did not think of how much such a truth—for the most beautiful of them all—would weigh.

Five never was able to really relax into his life, “just being,” never had those blanketed, long stretches of complex wondering a normal preteen and teen go through to find themselves. Maybe that was more or less the reasoning behind his snarky nature to, well, everyone. He was jealous of the lives they all got to lead. He envied being able to find himself and actually be whoever that was.

I tried to quiet them, built my life from order—books and ritual. I thought if I could master discipline of the mind, the world would follow. But every act of control has only sharpened the dissonance. So, I am taking a page from Kafka: I will solve this problem by letting it devour me. The thing living beneath the surface of me—ancient and restless, hungry to dissolve the boundaries—waits for exactly this, for the seams to split. Only, unlike him, I do not fear it; rather, I welcome it. He endured the absurd. I dance with it. And if it succeeds in devouring me—better to be consumed by the teeth of truth than to spend a lifetime running. I want it to smile at me, to know it sees me smiling back. Whether they be revelation or ruin, I do not know—much less care. What I do know is that they lead me somewhere... I cannot refuse to go.

Summary
After reliving Apocalypse!Klaus' memories in the Void of Harlan and Abigail, Klaus has a pretty good idea of how to get their powers back and deal with Reggie for good, if only he could stop getting himself killed in the process. And a lot of Five's hesitance around their relationship makes more sense, but that doesn't necessarily make it any better. Klaus still isn't the same person Five spent an entire lifetime with, even if he has that Klaus' memories now, and he can't help but question the fact that it's only once he's back, with those memories intact, that Five wants to be with him.
Featuring BAMF Klaus with All the Powers, Five barely maintaining grasp of his sanity, and their seriously confused siblings wondering how they missed all this relationship development...
