But each time he turned to go back (because being alone in these woods was stupid) he saw Sausage avert his eyes, Martyn shrug with an apologetic wince, and Drift stare at him silently.

Scott said the words so calmly Avid almost didn’t process them, but then they jolted through his nerves and up his spine, all colliding into a blind humming scribble in his mind. Whatever strange patience Scott now afforded Avid was not extended to humans. Scott had not changed, Avid had.
Avid reached out and tried to grab Scott’s hand. “No! Be nice to him.”

In the pit, his boots slipped over shadowed cobblestone. Strange that someone would replace the floor. If they were filling it in, they couldn’t have done more than a single layer because the treacherous hole was just as deep as Martyn remembered.
Martyn poured water over the rocks and had just called up for the Doc to lower a second stream for Martyn to swim up, when a faint dripping noise caught his attention. Water was seeping through the cobblestone into a hollow space. He looked down. Was there something under there? Cocking his head, he pulled out his pickaxe.

Summary
Many, many times, Elle has put herself in Avid's shoes, imagining how horrible it would be to lose control of herself in a way that's so violent. Many, many times, she has watched him snap and ached for him. She knows the effects of his illness inside and out, and yet all of that experience and careful thought hardly makes a dent in the horror that holds her captive after experiencing it for herself.
But she is not Avid; nobody will be coming to collect her.
Or: Elle, after Avid runs to Oakhurst.

"Owen," protested the girl, and her face came into view. "You're scaring him!"
She looked young. Not much younger than Avid himself though— her hair was a deep russet red, her skin pale and dusted with freckles along the nose. She looked like any other girl in any other village, with an expensive looking skirt and a contrastingly simple woolen jumper. Her hair was plaited into ribbons, gathered in two elaborate bunches to either temple. It made her look younger than she was, combined with the careless way she knelt in the dirt, and the smoke, and the widening puddle of blood that Avid couldn't see the source of.
But when she saw Avid cowering in his stinking bloody box, she smiled, and Avid saw two very sharp teeth.

See, he's been chasing Legundo around, grasping at the tiniest scraps of information, for what feels like the entire time he's been lost in these woods. And he's sick of it. Today, after a moment of relative calm and productivity, he's going to sit Legs down and actually talk to him.
He's only asking for help with his armor, what could possibly happen?
