“Who says they’re mine?” Jim breathed, a hysterical edge to his voice.
Bones obviously heard him, despite his efforts to keep him from doing so. Eyes narrowing dangerously, he took two brisk steps forward and hissed, “What?”
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________After the Narada is defeated, as the Enterprise limps home on limited power with an inexperience crew, Jim does his best to keep everything afloat while dealing with the after affects of the mind meld with Spock Prime. Plagued with thoughts, memories, and emotions he can't place or contain, Jim needs help whether he wants it or not. And of course the one person capable of helping him is his grieving half-Vulcan first officer who tried to beat him to death on the bridge. Not that he hadn't deserved it, but still. Risk versus benefit.

Gavin swallows, looking to the window to see if Hank and Connor are done, but they are preoccupied with the suspects.
“We won’t be interrupted in here for approximately seven minutes and thirty-six seconds,” Nines teases, bringing his hand up to Gavin’s throat, testing how hard he can squeeze.
He knows his pupils dilate when Nines grips his throat, but he’s determined not to give in. “Phck you,” Gavin spits out, but there isn’t much heat behind his words.
Nines must know this because he steps in even closer, his synthetic breath ghosting over the detective’s face. “Wouldn’t you like to.”

Oneirophobia - the fear of dreams.
Gavin has had a pretty fucked up life by most peoples standards. Shitty upbringing led to shitty nightmares which led to shitty insomnia and caffeine addictions and trying desperately not to keep flashing back to those horrible memories. It's been a while since his last bad patch - so when it happens again it's the first time with Nines as his partner. And Nines refuses to let him just continue the tried and tested self destructive tendencies he's used to cope his whole life up until now. Gavin can't understand why Nines even cares - or why he's being so nice, and considerate, and touchy, and why he keeps frowning in that sad way. Hell, Gavin can almost convince himself that Nines actually cares.Series

Summary
Everyone has tried to deviate RK-900 Nines, but nothing has ever worked. Still a machine, Nines can't understand emotions the way everyone else does, what makes him heartless in his every interaction with his partner, Gavin Reed. Detective Reed shows clear signs of mental health issues which makes him difficult to work with. Nines decides he'll become his partner's therapist - or simply someone he can talk to whenever he needs to. Stating that he won't judge him since he's not deviant, Nines will have to try to understand Gavin's emotions to give him insight and advice.
Surely exposing himself to human emotions won't make a difference, after all nothing has ever made him deviate, right?
