Since Maya could remember, running had been her pride and her joy.
She liked – no, she loved running.
It was her escape, her sanctuary— Running had become a vital part of Maya's life. It was a source of empowerment, a way to assert control over her body and her mind. The rhythmic pounding of her feet on the pavement, the rush of adrenaline, and the steady flow of endorphins provided her with a sense of freedom and power. Through running, she found strength, resilience, and a temporary escape from the demons that still lingered in her mind.
And it also woke those demons up.
Therapy had been a cathartic experience. It had bettered her life; Maya had not one single doubt about that fact. But it also left her fumbling for something to hold on to.
Who was she, really? How much of her personality is hers, and how much was her father’s influence?
