Feng Xin timed it so that Mu Qing wasn’t eating or drinking but Mu Qing didn’t react beyond raising an eyebrow. “Break up?”
“Uh, yeah, because...” How are you supposed to tell someone that you don’t think they’re happy anymore? That you're in love with them and that they only see you as a casual thing? Mu Qing was stressed and he never let Feng Xin meet his mom and he never moved in. Mu Qing hated when Feng Xin said I love you, actually; he’d get tense and change the subject. The one time Feng Xin had tried to talk about marriage, he’d said Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
“Fine.”

Feng Xin felt Xie Lian move, a simple turn of his head to look at him. ‘Can I ask you a question, Feng Xin?’ he asked in a whisper, as though making too much noise would destroy this little sanctuary.
Bracing himself, he hummed an assent. Xie Lian would be gentle with his questions, but Feng Xin didn’t know how to be gentle with his answers.
‘Do you…think that alphas and omegas have to pair up?’
He turned to meet Xie Lian’s gaze with a questioning hum.
‘I just mean…do you think it’s possible for two omegas to pair up instead? If they like each other, I mean.’
Feng Xin and Mu Qing are both alphas. They have known this about each other since they were kids. But when their little pack of three suffers a sudden shift in dynamics, this pure and simple fact about each other starts to grow complicated.

‘You’re the one who married the person you hate.’
That startled a laugh out of him, his heart jumping and fluttering in his chest like an absolute fool at such an absurd notion. ‘Eh? What are you talking about? How drunk are you?’
Feng Xin and Mu Qing make the seven-hour flight to Las Vegas for Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan's (secret) wedding. Mu Qing copes with a severe, newly-discovered phobia of flying by drinking through it. Feng Xin is left to deal with the fallout.

“I thought,” says Feng Xin slowly. “I thought you might want it?”
“I don’t even drink,” Mu Qing says incredulously, “and you think I might want the shitty weed you got from the potential cannibal you went on a bad date with?”
“Weed is different from booze,” Feng Xin argues. “Maybe it’ll help you, like. Relax, a little.”
“Who the fuck says I need to relax,” Mu Qing snaps.
“Fuck,” says Cuocuo, gummily but unmistakably.
Mu Qing stares at Feng Xin, who stares right back. “Please tell me that wasn’t his first word.”

It ends like this: Xie Lian’s shackles shatter, Jun Wu screams.
The sound, furious and utterly terrifying, reverberates around them, “How dare you?” He throws a sword to the ground. “How dare you break it?”
The explosion of spiritual energy leaves deep gouges in the walls of the mountain, evidence of its power, of what it took to break it.
Xie Lian’s face hardens behind Hua Cheng’s, and Feng Xin thinks he looks more like the confident crown prince he used to know, always ready for a battle, a challenge. He raises his head to speak when Jun Wu turns, locking eyes with Mu Qing.
“You,” he says, tone sick and disgusting with something akin to an overwhelming fake kindness, “you’ll do.”
or, Feng Xin dies, comes back to life, and wrecks Mu Qing's life (not necessarily in that order)

The deputy had a bit of Feng Xin’s temper. He didn’t tremble while Mu Qing held him by the collar. Whatever fear his expression held was one not born of Mu Qing’s rage in having to be here, looking for this man’s god. It was an expression Mu Qing might even have had reflected in his face had he not perfected himself nearly a millennia ago when godhood was still unobtainable and spending his life serving a palace was inevitable.
“We don’t know,” the deputy said.
800 years ago, Mu Qing searched for Xie Lian. Looking for Feng Xin too, was just a consequence of that.
He didn't have that same excuse now.

Mu Qing sets his chopsticks down. He doesn’t ask He Xuan what he means. He doesn’t look confused.
He Xuan swallows down the bitterness on his tongue. It says enough that he doesn’t really have to explain. But he tries anyway and Mu Qing nods along almost passively, for all appearances unaffected. It’s reassurance when he finally speaks, when He Xuan can hear how close to desperate it is when Mu Qing replies,
“So let’s make something change.”
