Slowly, Robert stands up. He’s shivering. He looks sick. His eyes are glassy, and Invisigal blinks. He hadn’t looked like that just a few moments ago. What the hell is he coming down with that it’s hitting him so hard and fast? . The door to his cell is unlocked. He doesn’t fight when he is roughly grabbed and shoved into the hallway. Robert looks over at Invisigal.
“Please,” he mumbles. He’s hunching forward, like he’s going to start trying to crawl out of his own skin. A million alarms are going off in Invisigal’s head, but there’s nothing she can do about them, “Whatever happens, stay in the cells.”

“I don’t dream,” Wolfwood said, lifting one shoulder in a shrug.
Meryl drummed her fingers against the steering wheel, her sharp eyes meeting Vash’s through the glass of the rearview mirror.
Wolfwood rarely talked in his sleep, but sometimes his lips moved, forming the shape of words like stop and don’t and please. His long lashes would flutter over the high arch of his cheekbones as he shivered and twitched, knees pulled up towards his chest like he was trying to make himself small. Vash had reached for him, once, fingertips barely skimming across the line of Wolfwood’s arm before he bolted upright, the whites of his eyes flashing wildly in the dark.
Vash and Meryl try to bring Wolfwood in from the cold. Told in seven parts.

Nicholas has no scars. Nicholas’s sins are erased. His body forgets with each vial; slate wiped clean so he can stain it anew.
But Vash carries every scar humanity has ever given him. Vash’s body refuses to forget. His sacrifices are etched into his body long after their causes have died.
Nicholas has seen Vash’s body push out bullets and shrapnel. He’s seen it transform into an alien horror beyond comprehension and then return to normal in the blink of an eye. He’s seen his twin, risen from near death draped in nothing but righteous anger and pale unblemished skin.
Vash keeps the scars on purpose. It’s unbearably cruel, but Vash is stubborn like that.
Vash’s body bears witness. Nicholas buries the evidence. Like a coward, he keeps his scars on the inside.
It doesn’t seem fair, or right. Maybe that’s the point.
Vash and Wolfwood take care of each other.

The signal filtered through the receptor speakers so clearly and with so little interference that Wolfwood startled, as though a stranger had manifested in the cockpit with them. But it was still the five of them, frozen in their concentration. He didn’t recognize the voice or this lonely, haunted string of words, meaningless and unhelpful at the edge of the galaxy. No coordinates, no name, no identification. As if, more than anything, they wanted to be remembered, not rescued. It played over and over again like a song: I’m sorry, and I love you. I’m sorry, and I love you. I’m sorry, and I love you.
This wasn’t a distress signal. It was an elegy.
// Wolfwood has spent the better part of his sorry life working in a refuse and litter ship, cleaning up the vestiges of a bygone galactic disaster. On the last flight of his career, his ship picks up a lonely call into the dark.

Lina playfully nudges at Vash with her shoulder, which barely clears his elbow, and Vash tilts his head away until Wolfwood can’t see his expression through the fall of his hair. Wolfwood feels his skin crawl with the urge to…to do something. Put a hand against Vash’s chest to double-check that his heart still beats inhumanly fast. Push his fingers through yellow hair so he can see blue skies again. Grab Vash by the shoulders and yell, scream, demand, Why did you leave?
“A blessing,” Wolfwood echoes mildly, and takes a sip of water.
(Or: Two years after Knives assaulted Vash and Vash destroyed both Knives and JuLai, Wolfwood’s search for Vash ends in a small, backwoods little church with a young woman and a seemingly amnesiac man. Legato isn’t far behind.)

Dreuer looked up, and found Gale’s hardened gaze staring intently back at him. For all his soft edges, the man had a rare ability to strip Dreuer to his bones and stare at his very core, to coax honesty from him when he knew damn well he would never have been honest before.
“I needed to see if I still could, but not near anyone I might hurt if it went wrong.” He grunted, slowly lowering his raised hand. Gale’s touch became gentler, the soft cushion of his palm encircled Dreuer’s thumb and he felt the soft and steady stroke of his fingertips over his knuckles.
“You’ve hurt yourself badly here, I’d say that's a rather efficient way to determine that this did, in fact, go very wrong. What were you thinking?”
“I had the capacity to do great things, and now I-“
“Dreuer.”
“What am I, if I have nothing left but you?”
