Summary
Inej Ghafa refused to let Heleen or her clients be her downfall, so she dove into the harbor in search of death before she had the chance to become a spider. Instead, she became the Wraith, the monster haunting Ketterdam's tides, killing slavers when they dock. She's accepted her fate and refuses to continue mourning the loss of the girl she was before.
Kaz Brekker is a monster by myth only. But his plan to take control of Ketterdam has been stalled since he was seventeen. Now, at 20 years old, he's starting to think that maybe it's time to move on from the grudges he's been nurturing since his youth. Maybe it's time to move on from everything.

Kaz didn’t know how long Inej needed to recuperate after what happened that night, but when she had so little going for her, he wasn’t about to let the other gangs get cocky because he had accidentally uncovered her secrets. She was fighting these people for a reason, so now it was his responsibility to see her goal through.It was better this way, though. In his business, secrets were a matter of currency and power. Kaz wanted neither over Inej. Even if it tore apart the fragile… whatever it was that they had… It was better this way.
He didn’t want to be the sort of person that betrayed her.

Summary
The Darkling uses merzost once again, though this time he just wants to make something good, something for him. He succeeds. So, she sends the boy away, and he grows up far away from any thoughts of Grisha, the Little Palace, or even Ravka itself.
Until sixteen years later, when one Kaz Brekker (the adopted son of the Rietvelds, though no one knew that particular detail about him) takes on a job to kidnap the Sun Summoner, and he and his crew find themselves in Ravka. Things start to get a little more complicated from there.

And yet, there she was sitting on his bed with her long thin tail wrapped around her, looking immensely pleased with herself in that way only cats can achieve. She blinked at him once, as if trying to trick him into believing that somehow or another she had been there all along. She had not been. Kaz sighed, leaned his cane against the nearest wall to free up both hands, and approached. Seeing what he intended, a shiver went over her as if of offense, and she slipped through his grasp like smoke. He turned, could not locate her. He checked the closet, under the bed, limped down the hallway, went back for his cane, and there she was on the bed exactly as before.
