    “Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”

    Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.

    “Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”

    “Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.

    “Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”

    This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.

    It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

    Shane stares at the half-empty bottle of vodka on the coffee table. “You suck.”

    “I suck? I scored hat-trick! In your stupid body! I have not eaten in six hours, Hollander. I have not pissed. I have not laid down. I want to go home.” 

    “Rozanov–” 

    “Your mother has called twenty times. Your manager has called thirty times. Your father text me picture of crossword puzzle and ask for help. Clue is about American President from the 1980s. I cannot help!”

    "Yeah. I meal prep every Sunday so I don't have to worry about dinner when I get home." Shane pauses, furrowing his eyebrows. "And it's Thursday. I try not to eat out on weekdays."

    "Ah. Okay," Ilya says, following it up with nothing else.

    What sort of meetings, Shane had finally asked, and Ilya had felt settled enough to say, “Annoying ones. I will be—ah, what is English word for when you have most money and biggest dick, so everyone must do as you say?”

    ilya's inner monologue here is so funny!! i love the idea of an alternate universe where shane became a doctor instead of a hockey player, yet they find each other anyway <3
