    1. He missed his siblings, and he cared for them more than he thought.
    2. Real fathers don't act like theirs.

    That changes things.

    And it's out there, on his own, that he learns the meaning of shifting.
    The 'kids run away and try to figure it out themselves' fic with an added twist.
